***THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED and the winner was Thandie Pakati – congrats!
I love all these nostalgic reinventions lately, and SodaStream is definitely part of that wave of brands who’ve transformed themselves to appeal to a generation who may be slightly wistful about days gone by (just me?). I remember the excitement of making up SodaStream drinks as a kid: the loud slurping of my siblings as they sipped on their concoction and the “fart noise” the gas made when your water was ready! And I must admit that I’ve been hankering after my own SodaStream since a friend told me how useful it was in terms of making sparkling water and delicious drinks for the kids.
So when I got offered a SodaStream Source to review (and one to give away – but more about that later!), I said YES PLEASE. Ours arrived and the first thing that struck me was how beautiful the design was – in fact one of the Sodastream machines recently won a coveted worldwide design award. And it’s no wonder: sleek, sophisticated and the most perfect shade of metallic blue, this is one gadget that is extremely easy on the eye.
My pack came with one cylinder, one reusable metallic accented bottle to make liquid in, plus some flavour samples to test out. The instructions are also easy to follow – even for me, who is (for some reason) a bit slow on the use of any kind of machinery!
You might think of SodaStream and not immediately think of health but now you should: as SodaStream wants to be all about making water more fun and exciting for the whole family, and not focusing on sugary drinks. In fact, according to their press release, “SodaStream drink mixes have at least 50% less sugar and calories than store bought drinks” (like Coke or Creme Soda), so if you were going to pick a fizzy drink, you’d be better positioned to make your own at home.
They are also more affordable than buying already bottled sparkling water – Sodastream makes a litre of sparkling water for R3.33. They are also kinder to the environment as you’re not chucking away a plastic bottle or can every time you consume a beverage. Instead you’re using their BPA-free bottles to house your drinks.
We have had great fun with ours so far, making up fizzy water – which we added lemon wedges and mint to (feeling very healthy with ourselves). We’ve also used it for spritzers and then we made up some ginger beer with the Sodastream mixer which tasted delicious, even though it was not as sweet as the one in the shops (which I kinda liked).
There are 14 flavours in total, including a Peach Iced Tea which sounds deeeee-licious. You can also use your SodaStream to make delicious festive cocktails, like the one in this pic: a sangria including lemonade, white wine, apples, blueberries and raspberries!
The button you press to add the carbonation is all sleek and fancy, with different droplets indicating how fizzy you want it, and there is also a special snap-lock way of inserting the bottles, which makes things nice and simple. The only thing you must be careful of is that you MUST release the gas after operating it by pushing up the carbonating block at the front. We didn’t do this the second time and we had a fountain of ginger beer spraying all over the floor (kids found it hilarious – obvs).
There are several SodaStream models available, ranging in price from R750 to R2500 and you can get them at a wide variety of stores in SA. They’re available in a variety of colours and they are totally gorgeous and utterly useful.
Now for the fun part: I have one of these SodaStream Source packs to give away which includes a gorgeous SodaStream machine, a cylinder, one reusable metallic bottle and two flavour samples to test out, worth a total of R2000.
