Megan and Siobhan (Shiv) are both good friends of mine: two unique, talented and dynamic women who are starting something that I believe the world needs. Retreats as a concept have been steadily rising in popularity, and it’s no wonder, with our urban lives and reliance on technology taking us further away from nature, and further away from being in touch with ourselves. In fact, tech allows us to be more connected to each other than ever before, but it doesn’t seem to be making us any happier.
I wanted to chat to Shiv (or Dr Dawson), a psychiatrist trained in South Africa and the UK, on what gave them the idea to start Anassa Retreats.
What inspired you both to start these retreats?
Anassa, which means “to inspire”, was born out of a dream to create sanctuary from our busy lives where we can restore our energy, discover the resources we have to live meaningful lives and kickstart healthy living.
In my Integrative Medical Practice, I recognised that many of my patients were exhausted – overwhelmed and disconnected from the priorities that truly gave them a sense of joy. We all live such demanding, over connected lives that it’s challenging to institute fundamental positive shifts in our lifestyles without taking the time to reflect and rest.
Even in my group of friends, almost every other person is taking an antidepressant, mood stabiliser or sleeping tablet. I realised that people have lost touch with their innate capacity to heal, and they don’t know that they can be empowered to make small changes which can fundamentally improve their own resilience, productivity, energy levels and experience of fulfillment.
It brings me great satisfaction when people start living intentional lives, making conscious decisions that allow them to step into their power.
Megan left her hectic corporate job and suffered the effects of burn out. She applied her precision and laser focus to learn how to heal the body through food, holistic therapies and meditative practices. She shares these transformative daily practices in an accessible and humorous way.
