Holiday

Sky, Moon, Stars, Home, Family.

Sky, Moon, Stars, Home, Family.

I love this picture Rachel and I made together. She coloured in the sky a midnight blue and then sprinkled it with silver stars. The moon we cut out together from yellow cardboard and she then coloured over it with orange. She is learning to draw circles so although I was itching to correct her and make it look more”circle like”, I managed to restrain myself.
The family isn’t necessarily us (unless we have an extra kid I don’t know about!). But I like the way they’re all gazing serenely into the distance together, enjoying… Read more

So. Skiing.

So. Skiing.

Let me just say upfront that I was never from one of those fancy families who went skiing every December. Our family went to Port Alfred. Or the Kruger Park if we were feeling adventurous. So skiing and snow were always something very foreign to me.
And then I did a season in Vail, Colorado after I finished university. I thought I’d be cool and snowboard but I was so terrible that after a particularly awful day where small children laughed at me as I fell off the ski lift and I had to get… Read more

On Coming Back Down to Earth

On Coming Back Down to Earth

Today has not been the best day. I don’t write a blog because I like to moan, but blogging is also about being honest and not pretending that your life is all shiny and happy and perfect, all the time (if at all?!).
There is always a comedown after a wonderful holiday – it’s only natural. Being on holiday means you can forget about work, forget about paying the bills, forget about all your grown up responsibilities. But that doesn’t mean they go away and in fact, they all build up while you’re away and… Read more

10 Things I Learnt this Holiday

10 Things I Learnt this Holiday

Wow – what a trip. We saw so much. And did so much. And ATE so much. That it’s all a bit hard to distill at the moment.
I’ve just come off a 30-hour journey: a train from Verbier at 6am to Geneva, then a flight to London Luton and then a train from there to London Heathrow, followed by a flight to Joburg. We landed this morning and then had to get another flight to Cape Town. Was SO wonderful to be reunited with our kids and then tomorrow we do the two day… Read more

You Know You’re On Summer Holidays When…

You Know You’re On Summer Holidays When…

You Know You’re On Summer Holidays When…

You find yourself wearing flip-flops five days in a row.
You eat scones with jam and cream for breakfast.
You realise what an amateur you are at applying suncream and you end up with a very strange tan.
Your skin stings in the shower (see above).
You have to “get your eye in” again when it comes to beach bats. And you start getting very competitive and trying to beat your record.
There is beach sand in EVERYTHING.
Your bikini basically doubles up as your underwear.
Your children… Read more

It’s Beginning to Feel a Lot Like Christmas (not really)

It’s Beginning to Feel a Lot Like Christmas (not really)

Guys, it’s almost Christmas – are you ready? I am not. I’ve bought about 10% of the presents I’ve supposed to have bought, have no idea what we’ll be eating on Christmas Day and have not made one homemade festive craft with my children. World’s most disorganised mother.
First though, can we talk about how pissed off Father Christmas looks in this pic? Not jolly at all. It can’t be that much fun though, can it? All those hysterical children who are terrified of you and those overbearing mothers who want their child to sit… Read more

Turn Me Over, I’m Done.

Turn Me Over, I’m Done.

As I tweeted earlier today: Turn me over, I’m DONE.
I’ve had it. Enough of people dying. Enough of endless grey days of rain. Enough of schizophrenic interpreters and little babies being raped and Oscar Pistorius shooting his lovely girlfriend and massacres in Kenya and the swimming pool at Nkandla and EVERYTHING ELSE. ENOUGH. There’s been too much craziness and sadness in 2013.
I’ve been tired at the end of previous years but nothing like this before. My mind honestly feels like it cannot concentrate on ONE more hour of work. The cogs and the… Read more

Remembering Christmas

Remembering Christmas

Isn’t life just a bit hectic at the moment? Like everyone is on fast forward towards the end of the year and there are so many demands to be met before then.
People are tired and stressed and SHOUTY and there just seems to be lots of drama everywhere. I’m holding on to the thought of Christmas and time spent with family.
I can’t help thinking about current Christmases without thinking about past ones though. Christmas as a child is something very special and I know now that the holidays of my youth were pretty… Read more

Fynbos, Baby Blues and a Ladybug

Fynbos, Baby Blues and a Ladybug

We went away this past weekend to the Western Cape for my mom-in-law’s 60th and what a beautiful weekend it was.
These are all the things I learnt:

That Cape Town and Joburg are such VERY different cities. The people, the roads, the landscape, the “feel” of the place more than anything. I adore Joburg but Cape Town is less lawless – people stop at red lights and drive at the speed limit. The streets are clean. It feels more provincial, less like a city and more like a village and sometimes that’s very refreshing.… Read more

Finding the Perfect Swimwear for Summer (Guest Post)

Finding the Perfect Swimwear for Summer (Guest Post)

As we head rapidly towards the December holidays, many of you may be thinking about buying a new cozzie. This is not often a task that fills us with delight but don’t despair, because my ever fashionable friend and stylist Pippa J has compiled some handy hints and tips. Here she is:
“Can I just start by talking about things people wear over their swimsuit? I see way too many women who wear board shorts. They obviously think that these shorts hide their bums, and that they’re less offensive than a bum in a cozzie.… Read more
