Meet a Mom: Renee

In the latest interview in my Meet a Mom series, we chat to Renee, who’s undergone a huge health transformation over the past few months. I’m sure you’ll find her story as interesting as I did.

  1. Tell us about yourself

My husband Alex and I live in Newlands with our 5-year old son and 3-year old daughter.  I work from home as a bookkeeper/PA to a Joburg businessman and I work flexible hours so I can spend time with my kids.

  1. How would you describe Crohn’s disease to someone who knows nothing about it?

Crohn’s disease is an auto-immune disease, which affects the digestive tract – mine is in my small intestine. The intestine is constantly inflamed, which triggers the immune system to attack it. It’s sort of like sticking a plaster over a plaster over a plaster…eventually there are so many plasters on there that it constricts the bowel completely. This causes extreme abdominal pain and in the worst case, it ends up in surgery. Continue Reading…

Meet a Mom

In Simone’s words: On the afternoon of 15 September 2015 our lives changed forever. Our beautiful, perfect daughter Isabella, 7 ½ months old, died tragically. “Belsie” asphyxiated on her own vomit in her cot and help was too late to bring her back. On the morning of 4 May 2016, our son Thomas was born prematurely at 26 weeks and 3 days. We had much hope for his survival but he only lived for a few hours before joining his sister in heaven. I only met Lauren a few months ago but was immediately impressed with her steely determination when we started our training together, as well as her great sense of humour! She is a real toughie. But it was only when I heard that she’d lost nearly 20kg that it all started making sense, because you don’t achieve those kinds of physical changes without being made of something special.
